Garden

Who is responsible for the maintenance of my garden?

You are responsible for maintaining your garden. With good maintenance, you can prevent inconvenience and damage.

Accessible facade and roof
The facade, window frames and the roof must remain accessible for maintenance. Please take this into account when planning the garden.

Branches, weeds and tiles
Here are a few rules to prevent an overgrown and/or neglected garden:

  • Regularly prune trees and plants so that overhanging branches do not obstruct anyone or block the sunlight.
  • Keep the grass in the garden short and remove weeds, also between the tiles.
  • Broken tiles must be replaced by the tenants.
  • Do not use the garden as a storage or parking area or for dumping waste.

Not all trees and plants are allowed
We do not recommend planting trees in your garden. Trees can become very tall and often grow faster than you think. Conifers and pines are not allowed. If a tree in your garden has to be removed and it has a diameter of more than thirteen centimetres, you have to apply for a felling licence from the municipality. You are not allowed to plant ivy or climbing hydrangea as these will damage the facade.

Fencing or hedges
You are allowed to build a fence to separate your garden from the neighbours or a communal path. There are, however, a few conditions:

  • Ask the neighbours and Lieven de Stad for permission beforehand.
  • Fences must be made of solid, safe and durable material.
  • You are responsible for the maintenance together with the neighbours.
  • Fences must comply with the building regulations for fences. Check the building regulations or ask the municipality for information.

Respect the plot boundaries
Trees should be at least one and a half metres from the plot boundary and the facade. They may not be higher than four metres. Shrubs and hedges should be at least half a metre from the plot boundary and should not exceed two metres in height. Large bushes may not be planted against the facade and a path of at least one and a half metres must remain open.

Shed or storage room
You must ask permission from Lieven de Stad before placing a shed or storage room.
